A return trip to my favourite stomping ground, the Scottish Highlands, for an early spring hike along the West Highland Way. Starting in the town of Milngavie just north of Glasgow, the 95-mile route heads north along the shore of Loch Lomond and into the mountains, passing some of the finest Highland scenery. It finishes at Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. I walked the route in 7 days with my Dad and my stepmother Margaret.

Beginning in the town of Milngavie, the West Highland Way leads north on gentle paths to Drymen, a mild introduction for what's to come. It then climbs over Conic Hill and winds through the woodlands on the east shore of Loch Lomond with breathtaking views up and down the loch. Approaching the halfway point at Crianlarich, the mountains begin to close in on all sides.

The northern half of the route from Crianlarich to Fort William begins by sharing the valley bottom with the main road and railway line. The scenery and character of the walk improves after Bridge of Orchy, featuring the crossing of the wild Black Mount and dramatic views of Glen Coe before ascending the Devil's Staircase to a breathtaking viewpoint. The forest tracks of the final few miles are something of an anticlimax in comparison.
