Terraces at Chitre near the top of our climb, with Dhaulagiri still just visible in the haze. Corn, barley or fodder is grown in the spring season (the barley is used to make tsampa, the local variety of porridge), and rice in the autumn season after the summer rains. These hills to the south of the Annapurna range are especially productive because they receive more rain in the monsoon.
