A welcome sight: Base Camp Lodge at 4,540m. This was a surprisingly well-equipped place which even boasted a satellite phone and a bakery. One appealing feature of the high-altitude lodges is the dining room. In the cold evenings the lodge owner places a bucket of hot coals under the table, and everyone pulls the thick blanket which is draped over the table on to their knees. Result: toasty warm feet.
